Hey everybody, I’m on the road right now, currently hanging out at Minton’s in Harlem, which means I’m not in the studio this week.
I’ll try to make it up with another full song tutorial next weekend.

One of my students asked to learn a Clash song, and this was the first one that came to mind. It’s got a great little solo from Mick Jones, who is apparently Joe Strummer’s gee-tar he-ro.
The slideshow I created wasn’t working too great. It was using the full-size versions of the pictures instead of generating smaller versions, which made it WAY too large to load properly (over 250mb). I’ve stuck all the pictures on the gallery page for now.
Check ’em out.
Here’s how I play the 2nd solo from the Opeth song “Deliverance”. I used to play this one differently (same notes, different positions), but I checked the Lamentations DVD performance and, while you never get a good view of his hands, it appears that Mikael plays this much lower on the neck than I was. I’m not sure if it’s 100% accurate fingering-wise, but the notes are spot on.
Here’s Tony’s solo from Black Sabbath’s self-titled song off their self-titled album. Euthanazia used to do this live, and it was always a ton of fun, especially the solo.
So… I’m pretty sure this is the first tutorial on how to play this song. There is precisely ONE tab online, and no videos that I can find that focus on Larry’s part. There are TONS of people telling you how to play Les’ parts, but nobody shows any love for Larry. That is a shame, because Larry LaLonde is a damned brilliant player.
So here’s the whole tune… every part. Enjoy!
Here’s Dave Murray’s solo from a Maiden classic. I find most people miss the reckless quality of Dave’s playing in this one, so keep it loose, guys!
One of my students brought this song in and I was delighted to find that it had a very short, simple solo that stayed primarily within the basic minor pentatonic shape. The little harmonized bending lick is a cool ditty to throw into any country solo, and this one (having it 4 times in a row) really helps to show how it relates to the chord.
I’ve been hocking these things for years. I tell everybody about ’em, often just giving them away and buying more for myself. Most people I show them to end up switching to them completely. Why? Because they’re awesome.
